Our blog is a forum for members to discuss issues affecting the sector and the practice of philanthropy.Philanthropy New York created the Documentary Film Series to get our members thinking about alternative avenues for promoting their missions.
For decades, documentaries have been incredibly influential and provoked immediate reactions—and immediate action—on behalf of significant issues.
Documentary films often demonstrate how a relatively small amount of funding can make a large impact and help nonprofits and social advocates reach a broader audience. The genre extends into so many different areas—child welfare and education, disaster relief, health care, the environment—and delivers a whole host of stories directly and effectively.
We also know that film is a social medium, and that documentaries work best when audiences have an opportunity to engage the filmmakers—and each other—about them.
We host panel discussions with the creators after each screening to allow attendees to talk about a variety of topics, including the impact of the film and how the issues addressed can "live" beyond the screening.
We also host wine-and-cheese receptions before the films—and this year, Philanthropy New York members and their guests will get to join the filmmakers and panelists for an exclusive meet-and-greet during those receptions!
We encourage our guests to bring their family and friends to these events to share in the experience, and we thank the Ford Foundation, the new hosts of our Documentary Series, for their ongoing and generous support.
