Once again, the nation has been shocked by a mass shooting, this time at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn. where 20 young children and six educators lost their lives. This tragic incident has sparked a more widespread and profound demand for change: in laws, regulations and social norms that guide the use of guns in America.

For years, nonprofit advocacy and education organizations have been leading calls for sensible regulations and common sense approaches to gun safety. Media organizations have helped to bring greater attention to the scope and seriousness of the problems associated with gun violence:

  • Nearly 100,000 gunshot victims annually.
  • 12,000 murders, 18,000 suicides and hundreds of accidental deaths.
  • Nearly 70,000 injuries associated with gunfire.

What can philanthropy do to support efforts by nonprofit advocacy and media organizations to change the national conversation about sensible gun regulations?

Philanthropy New York and Media Impact Funders will convene a briefing with authoritative gun policy advocates at the state and national level, as well as leaders in media and philanthropy, to identify ways that philanthropy can support efforts to accelerate the change. There will also be a screening of Living for 32after the program.

A Philanthropy New York Collaborative Program co-sponsored by Media Impact Funders.
This program is "Mostly Open."
